To a ship out in sea, especially in a stormy night, the beacon of light shining from a lighthouse is an extremely welcome sight. One that beckons them to safety.
Although we may not all have been in that particular situation, we have all at some time needed some sort of “light” to see our way to the place we are going. Whether it is a small flashlight, night light, room light, or a beam from a light house on the shoreline of the water…these all offer the essential illumination needed.
Metaphorically, our “way” in life can also seem very “dark” sometimes. Broken relationships, loss of loved ones, financial stress, illness, etc. are all situations that can be experienced, and may create the feeling of being “lost”; uncertain of the future when your present circumstance has greatly changed.
What or who provides the “light” needed at that time? A loving, understanding family member or friend, or pastor, all can be wonderful sources of encouragement and direction. But, even more importantly, having a relationship with Jesus, who is the “Light of the World” (John 8:12) is what brings a steady illumination to the situation. Being in the Word of God, and in the fellowship of other believers, gives us the direction and perspective we may need! Whether your relationship with Jesus is new and not clearly understood, or one of many years and deeply developed, Jesus desires to be that “Light” for us.
At a time when very difficult circumstances and loss affected our family, I wrote the following.
The Storm Within
The clouds are thick and oh so dark and gray
Surely, as predicted, a storm is soon on its way.
The thunder booms, the lightning is a sight to see
But, it’s the storm within that deeply troubles me.
Jesus tells us often, not to worry or fear—
His Word promises to us, that He is always near.
Dear Lord, my Lord, please calm my anxious heart!
May Your truth bring peace, may Your Spirit impart:
The comfort You promise to every seeking and troubled soul.
The healing You bring, that makes us forgiven and whole.
Like the beam from a lighthouse, to a ship lost at sea,
May Your truth shine its light, dispelling all worry and fear in me.
Dear Lord, Thank you for being like a lighthouse for us. Providing the beacon of light through Your Word, and through the Holy Spirit, You promise to give us the direction and wisdom we need for all of life’s circumstances! We praise and love You! Amen.
