According to traditions of the Church, this season of 40 days is a time of spiritual preparation. It is significant also, as it the period of time that Jesus spent in the wilderness prior to His ministry on earth. The season of “Lent” as a time of preparation is thought to be first implemented in 325 A.D. Although some Christian denominations don’t acknowledge this time in any specific way, many others do. It is historically a time for prayer, fasting, and generally giving up of something, a ‘spiritual discipline’ to draw you closer to God. Some churches have additional services to encourage their congregations to gather together for this purpose of remembrance.
If not food, some choose to “give up” something else to serve as a reminder to spend more time in prayer, and seeking God’s direction in their lives. A time to reflect and confess any sin in our life (see Psalms 139:23-24). Whatever you may choose to do in these days before the celebration of Holy Week and God’s amazing love for us, by giving us His Son to pay for the penalty of our sins—may we use this time by spending more time with Him, in prayer and with deep gratitude for His love!
