As our nation has recently gone through a very memorable (and often tumultuous) process of national/state/local elections…this verse has been foremost in many peoples’ minds and prayers! Our founding fathers risked all to seek and fight for a country to have the freedoms we now have in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. A Constitutional Republic was formed which protected the “voice” of all citizens, not just those living in the most populated areas or cities. The freedom of free speech, freedom of religion etc.; all of these make the United States exceptional in the world. But…as John Adams wrote, “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/john_adams_391045)
As believers in Christ, our highest authority is the Lord God, and His Word (the Bible). In it we are instructed to pray for our leaders and those in earthly authority over us. But as it says in Prov. 29:2 “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked person rules, people groan.” (NASB) When those who value and seek God’s wisdom and blessing are in authority (at any and all levels of government), “..the people rejoice…” and when the opposite
is happening “…the people groan.”
How important to continually pray for our leaders, that they will have the courage to protect our amazing Constitution and the Bill of rights, and wisdom in leading our country to follow God’s ways! We all recognize there is much to be ‘made right’ from policies and decisions that have NOT been good. But, we have a wonderful promise in II Chron. 7:14 ‘(if) My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’
Not only in this time when we gather with friends and family, but every day, let us follow the admonition from I Thess. 5:18:
“ …in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
