There is a gospel song that goes “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…Let it shine till Jesus comes, I’m going to let it shine.” (originally written by Harry Dixon Loes around 1920)
We have just celebrated Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the “Light of the World”. His birth was the fulfillment of the prophecy “those who have walked in darkness have seen a great light!” (Isaiah 9:2) Jesus, the Messiah, Emmanuel, “God With Us”…all names of the One who came to save us from the penalty of sin and separation from God the Father.
Often, during a Christmas Eve service, people are given a candle which is lit, and then one after another each candle is lit from the person next to them. Soon, the dark room is filled with the soft and beautiful glow of many small candles burning. Such a lovely way to think of how the glow of one candle can make a difference, when shared with others.
Jesus, God’s “Candle” came on that first Christmas; shining the Light of God’s love and forgiveness, and to all who receive it, enables them to share that “light” with others, by His grace! It is my prayer for you and for me, that we will share the Light of the World to others, and daily live in His Light!
May we eagerly and faithfully await His return, and “shine” until He comes!
