Soaring high in the sky, eagles depict a beautiful picture of grace, courage and strength. Mentioned 34 times in the Bible, these references to eagles, or “under the shadow of His wings” can bring us comfort in this global time of fear and uncertainty, with the rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus pandemic. We need to have frequent reassurances of God’s sovereign strength and protection. An eagle in flight, soaring easily in the sky, is a symbol of these attributes.
One resource I saw on the internet listed the “Leadership Qualities of Eagles”.
1.Eagles have powerful vision.
2.Eagles are fearless.
3.Eagles are tenacious.
4.Eagles are high flyers.
5.Eagles nurture their young.

Although our God is so much more than an eagle, these qualities can bring us a sense of comfort. God sees all and knows all. He is sovereign over all, and has defeated evil. Jesus says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NKJV). God sees from a perspective so much higher than we do, “ ‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways’, says the LORD. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than you ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.’ ” Isaiah 55: 8-9
Finally, but just as importantly, God indeed DOES nurture and care for His own. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” Psalms 91: 1-2 Take a moment to read all of Psalms 91 to learn more of how our God cares for and protects us.
Who can take comfort in these words? All who call upon the Lord, and seek Him.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” John 6:37.
Dear Lord, Thank you for the symbol of the eagle: of strength, courage and grace; but help us to see YOU as the true source of strength, courage, and protection. Thank you that as we come to You with a sincere heart and believe in Your Son, you receive us, and call us Your children. As the Psalmist, may we also say,
“My God, in Him I will trust!”
