ADVENT. The 4 weeks prior to the celebration of Christmas is called the season of Advent in the Christian church calendar. First known to be used in the 12th century, this word can create many rich emotional associations and memories. Eager anticipation! Joyful celebration! But, perhaps the most poignant is HOPE!
In addition to the recognition of its significance in Christendom, this word also means “a coming into being or use” (www.merriam-webster.com). The first Sunday in Advent signals the beginning of a new calendar year for those who adhere to the historical Christian calendar; the old has come to its close, and the new year is coming into being.
I have been very moved by this idea recently, as I reflect back and remember all the challenges of this past year. Personally, our family has experienced loss of loved ones and dear friends, serious illnesses of close friends and family, significant transitions and uncertainties. But, for millions of others nationally and globally, crises of violence as well as natural disasters have wreaked devastation and great sorrow! How we all need a new beginning! How we all long for a HOPE that tomorrow brings a brighter future. In a few weeks, the world celebrates a day ascribed to the birth of One who promises to be the fulfillment of that hope!
Isaiah 61:1-3 “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted,
and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.[a]
2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come,[b]
and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
3 To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks
that the Lord has planted for his own glory.” (NLT)
In Jesus’ own words, He said, “I am the Light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)
Comfort for those who mourn, good news to the poor, freedom for those enslaved by their own sin, beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair… Light to lead the way!! What wonderful promises we have, all because God gave us His ultimate gift, His Son!!
During this season of Advent, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of God’s GIFT to us, may these truths be the focus of your thoughts and heart! May these words fill you with the HOPE that brings beauty to your life, joy to your soul. May you walk in the LIGHT that promises to lead you out from the darkness, into the light of His truth, into life!!
