The day is beautiful! I have looked forward to this outing and walk for a long time. I really need the relaxing time in nature, and to sit at the overlook at the end of the path, with its view that is so spectacular. It seems that from that vantage point I can see forever, and it gives me a sense of perspective and peace. Then, with no warning, I come to the Road Closed sign. I can see that my way is blocked, and there is no other path to the overlook where I had hoped to go and rest. This is so disappointing!

The above scenario is simply a story of what this picture brings to mind as I look at it. On our journeys of life, we all hit a “Road Closed” at some point. Depending on where the closure is, and how it affects us, the resulting emotions can range from “No big deal” to “Oh no! Now what?!” Sometimes the highlight of that road represents a very important aspect of our life: a career move or advancement, perhaps the hope of certain relationship prospering and developing, or the hope of a cure for a serious illness. Again, the degree of importance of what is now blocked to us, will be reflected in the intensity of our disappointment.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” (Proverbs 13:12 ESV) Deep disappointment can lead to discouragement and despair. When faced with various “Road Closed” situations, I have felt many of those things. I realize that often I have such a strong “agenda” and road map of what I feel is the right path for me, that to be deterred away from that path seems devastating.
As I bring those emotions and thoughts to the Lord, He gently reminds me, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life…” (John 14:6 ESV) His way is the one that takes us to the Father, and that road will not be closed. We may not be able to see it immediately, but from His vantage point and overlook, the view and outcome will be “infinitely more than all we can ask or imagine…” (Eph. 3:20 ISV) His power working in us, through His Holy Spirit will take us to a destination that will bring us TRUE peace, blessing, and fulfillment!
Again, I am reminded of a beautiful hymn, “Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord”. Listen to the music as you read the words; make them your prayer, as it is mine.
