“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV)
Thousands gathered at the steps of the capitol building, waiting to do just that. Franklin Graham, in his “Decision America 2016 Tour” is visiting the capital city of each state this year. He is calling people to come together to pray and be humble before God, to seek His grace, mercy, and direction for our land. When asked by many around the country, “What can we do?” he gives simple answers:
•Pray
•Vote
Opening up with scriptures from Nehemiah 1:2-7, Mr. Graham reminds the audience that we need to come before God, and humbly ask forgiveness of our own & family sins, as well as the sins of our land. He encourages people to pray for all the elected officials, and to consider serving in some capacity in the political arena.
In Lincoln, Nebraska, the words etched in stone above the doors of the Capitol building read “The Salvation of the State is the Watchfulness in the Citizen”. As we stood on those steps beneath these words, we realize that as citizens of this land we do need to be watchful and involved; but as citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, we know that true salvation comes from Christ alone. Our “hope” is ultimately not in any political party, but in God alone.
In the story of Nehemiah, God heard his prayers and restored the walls of Jerusalem. God is faithful to His Word. Let us humbly and fervently pray for our land!
